WARDOGS high ping, lag and rubber-banding: how to fix it
Check ping in the server browser before joining, and pick one region near you. If ping is fine and you still warp, it's packet loss on your side (Wi-Fi, a saturated upload, a VPN). If the whole server warps together, it's the server: leave it. A rented community server in your region is the reliable fix for a group that plays every night.
1. Read the ping before you join
The server browser shows ping per server. Under 50 ms ideal, 90 fine, over 120 is a handicap in a 100-player game with vehicles. Sort by ping, then by players. A full 45 ms server beats a half-full 20 ms one for fun; a 150 ms server is never worth it.
2. Region
Select only your region. Multi-region selection returns an empty list on the current build, and "auto" can drop you a continent away. UK players: EU West. US players: pick the coast you're on.
3. Wi-Fi is the usual cause
Rubber-banding with a normal ping number is packet loss. Wi-Fi loses packets when someone else on the network streams, or when the router's overloaded.
- Ethernet cable. Nothing else on this list matters as much.
- If you must use Wi-Fi: 5 GHz band, router in line of sight, nobody uploading.
- Powerline adapters are better than Wi-Fi, worse than a cable.
4. Things on your side that add latency
- VPNs and "gaming accelerators": off. They route you somewhere else first.
- Uploads: cloud backups, Steam uploads, someone's video call. Pause them.
- QoS on the router: enable it and prioritise the PC, or turn on "gaming mode" if your router has one.
- Bufferbloat: run a bufferbloat test; if it's bad, enable SQM/QoS on the router or cap the upload slightly below your line speed.
5. When it's the server
If every player warps at the same moment, that's the server dropping ticks, common in the first days when hosts are tuning. Leave and pick another. Community servers on dedicated hardware (QONZER runs bare metal) tend to hold up better than overloaded official ones on launch night.
6. Hit registration
"I shot first and died" in a 100-player game is usually 60–90 ms of round trip plus the other player's ping. Lower your own ping (steps 1–4), and prefer servers under 50 ms for close-quarters play. There's no setting for it beyond that.
7. Packet loss test
Windows: ping -n 50 1.1.1.1 in a command prompt. Any "Request timed out" or loss over 1% with a cable means the problem is your line or router, not the game.
FAQ
What ping is good for WARDOGS?
Under 50 ms is ideal, under 90 is fine. Over 120 you'll notice on vehicles and in close fights.
Why is my ping fine but the game rubber-bands?
Packet loss, not latency. Almost always Wi-Fi or a saturated upload. Cable in and stop uploads on the network.
Are the servers lagging?
On launch day, some will be. If everyone on the server is warping at once, it's the server. Change server.
Sick of full servers and queues?
Rent your own WARDOGS server from an approved host and play with your mates on your rules. UK/EU: QONZER (bare metal, no slot fees). Anywhere else: BisectHosting (21 locations). Casual group: xREALM (pay by the hour). Full comparison.
