WARDOGS "can't fetch game data", can't join any server, kicked mid-match: launch-night capacity

Updated 2026-09-10 · Fixes

On launch night WARDOGS admits you past the login queue and then can't put you in a game: "can't fetch game data", "failed to connect to server in a reasonable time", "not enough servers", "no servers active", or a random kick mid-match, plus error 1628505091 on connect and "took too long to join match" the instant you pick a server. Some players clear the whole 2-hour queue, get put through the tutorial again, then can't join anything. One forum thread put it bluntly: 30 servers, 990 slots, 400,000 players. It's a capacity and rate-limit problem on BULKHEAD's side, not your PC. Nothing you install or toggle changes it.

What's happening

What actually helps

  1. Retry the server browser, one region only, sort by free slots, join anything open immediately.
  2. If every attempt fails, stop and come back later. This is capacity; it clears as they add servers and Valve lifts the cap, likely a day or two, not minutes.
  3. Do not reinstall, verify, change video settings or reboot to fix it. Those don't touch a server problem and each one throws you back into the login queue.
  4. Watch your playtime if you might want a refund: queue and menu time counts. Refund details.

What it is not

The "server has slots but is full" thing

A server showing, say, 53/100 but rejecting you with "server queue is full" or a maxed response time is the same capacity crunch one layer down. The slot count is the match; the queue in front of that match is separate and full. So a server can look half-empty in the browser and still not let anyone new in, because its join-queue is maxed and the backend that assigns slots is rate-limited. It isn't a display bug you can beat by refreshing faster; the bottleneck is behind the number.

Known error codes and messages (all the same cause)

All of these are the launch-night capacity and rate-limit crunch, not separate bugs and not your PC. BULKHEAD (6pm UTC): "We're seeing more players start to filter into matches. In-server player numbers are increasing as the queue is being processed slowly." It is moving, just slowly.

When it'll be fixed

BULKHEAD is adding server capacity and working with Valve on the login rate limit through launch night. Expect it to settle within a day or two as the launch crowd thins and capacity catches up. This page and the known issues list update as they post.

FAQ

Why can't I join any WARDOGS server?

Launch-night server capacity. There are far more players than servers, so you clear the login queue but then can't be placed in a match. It's backend, not your PC.

Why did I get kicked mid-match?

The same capacity crunch and the Valve login rate limit. Servers are dropping players as BULKHEAD scales. Not a ban.

Does reinstalling fix "can't fetch game data"?

No. Nothing client-side fixes a server-capacity problem. Don't reinstall or change settings; that only sends you back through the queue.
