How a fire mission works
Artillery in WARDOGS is a three-part solution:
- Range — the distance from the gun to the target, in metres. That's the input above.
- Azimuth — the compass bearing from gun to target, where 0° is north, 90° east. Read it off the compass or line it up on a map. This tool doesn't need it — but you do, to point the barrel the right way.
- Elevation — the barrel angle in mils, which decides how far along that bearing the shell lands. That's what the calculator gives you.

Reading the ground
The firing tables assume the gun and target sit at the same height. They don't in a river valley like Bakurani. A shot from the valley floor onto high ground lands short; a shot from a ridge downwards lands long. That's what ranging is for: fire one round, watch where it falls, correct, and land the second on target. The high arc is more forgiving over terrain than the low arc.
A note on the data
The distance-to-mils firing tables here come from the open-source, MIT-licensed wardogs-calculator by apollyon-sys — community-measured Early Access values. They're close, but they're not official and BULKHEAD can retune the guns in a patch. Always range your first shot rather than trusting a single number blind.

How do you aim artillery in WARDOGS?
You need range, azimuth (compass bearing, 0 degrees north) and elevation in mils. Paste your gun and target coordinates into this tool and it works out all three; or enter the distance yourself and read the azimuth off the compass.
Can I paste coordinates from the game?
Yes. Copy the x, y coordinate string from the game for your position and your target, paste them in, and the tool computes distance, azimuth and elevation. 1 game unit equals 100 metres.
What is the range of the L81 mortar?
The buildable L81 mortar fires from about 132 m to 684 m, reloads in 6.5 seconds, and only has a steep (high) arc. Inside 132 m no elevation will reach.
What is the SPH-2's range?
The SPH-2 155mm reaches from about 780 m to 2,629 m with a ~750 m dead zone around it. It has a low arc (fast and flat) and a high arc (drops over ridges), and reloads every 27 seconds.
Why did my shell land short or long?
The firing tables assume flat ground. Firing uphill lands short, downhill lands long. Fire one ranging round, correct, and put the second on target.
What are mils?
A mil is the elevation unit WARDOGS uses for the barrel angle. On the L81 a higher mil number is a steeper, shorter shot; the tool converts distance to the right mil for you.
