WARDOGS controller support: what works, what doesn't, and the settings to use
Controller support is real but limited in the Early Access build: core movement, gunplay, menus and some vehicle controls work on Xbox and PlayStation pads through Steam Input, but there's no full action map, no official preset, and aim assist isn't confirmed. It's playable for infantry; it's hard on helicopters.
Getting the pad recognised
- Steam → Settings → Controller → enable Xbox or PlayStation configuration support for your pad.
- Right-click WARDOGS → Properties → Controller → set to Enable Steam Input if the game doesn't see the pad natively.
- Launch with the pad connected before the game starts; hot-plugging is unreliable in the beta build.
What's mapped by default
| Action | Status |
|---|---|
| Move, look, sprint, jump, crouch, prone | Works |
| Fire, ADS, reload, weapon swap | Works |
| Menus and server browser | Works |
| Buy menu (cash loadout) | Works, fiddly |
| Ground vehicles | Works |
| Helicopters | Bound, but collective/pedal control on sticks is rough; most pad players avoid flying |
| Building / placing | Some actions have no default bind; map them in Controls |
| Proximity vs team voice push-to-talk | Map both to buttons or the d-pad; one has no default |
Settings that make it playable
- Look sensitivity around 40–50% horizontal, slightly lower vertical, with aim (ADS) sensitivity at 60–70% of that.
- Deadzone 8–10% on a new pad, 12–15% on one with drift.
- Response curve: if the game offers it, "exponential" or "aggressive" gives fine control near centre.
- FOV 90 on a pad; wider makes distant targets too small to track with a stick.
Steam Input tricks
- Gyro aim: on DualSense or a Switch Pro pad, bind gyro to "as mouse" while ADS. It's the single biggest accuracy gain on a pad in a game with no aim assist.
- Map the buy-menu categories to a radial menu on the right stick click.
What's missing
No official controller preset, no confirmed aim assist, no on-screen button prompts for pad glyphs in every menu. BULKHEAD lists it as an area to improve through Early Access. If they publish a proper controller update, this page will carry it.
FAQ
Does WARDOGS support controllers?
Partially. BULKHEAD describes it as limited. Movement, shooting, menus and most vehicles work; some actions have no default binding and there's no aim assist confirmed.
Is there aim assist on controller?
Not confirmed by BULKHEAD at launch. Against mouse players on a 100-player map, plan for none.
Does a PS5 DualSense work?
Through Steam Input, yes. Enable PlayStation configuration support in Steam's controller settings and the game sees it as a standard pad.
